The spooky season is upon us! But Halloween isn’t just for the kiddos; it’s a time for moms to embrace some fun too. Forget about candy corn and costumes for a moment, and let’s talk about you.

This Halloween-themed drawing exercise is more than just art—it’s a way to create a small oasis of calm in your bustling day.

Creating art can be therapeutic, and this exercise is no exception. Focusing on the repetitive motion of drawing the web can quiet your mind, offering a break from the whirlwind of motherhood. Plus, the gradual shading requires you to slow down, fostering a sense of mindfulness. Lastly, the simple act of making something beautiful can provide a sense of accomplishment that is sometimes missing in the chaos of daily life.

Supplies for the Mindful Spider Web Drawing for Halloween exercise

Supplies used:

Bristol paper (Winsor & Newton), alcohol markers (ohuhu), fineliner 0.1, 1.0 (Ohuhu).

Alternative supply suggestions:

You can use any material for this exercise, such as colored pencils, crayons, or a pencil. 

Instructions:

Step 1: Draw a few spokes for the spiderweb
Step 1 – Draw the spokes

Before you start, slowly breathe in and out a few times to clear your head. Then, bring yourself to the present, away from all the day-to-day stress.

Begin by drawing a small circle in the middle of your paper. This will be the center of your spider web.

Draw 6-8 lines from the center circle radiating outward, like a wheel’s spokes. Don’t worry about making it perfect; just aim for symmetry.

Step 2: Begin connecting the spokes with curved lines using the darkest shade of your chosen color
Step 2 – Colorful connections

Select different shades of the same color; the darkest will go near the center, and the lightest will go near the edges. The gradual change in shades can help you focus and settle your mind as you go along.

To get in a Halloween vibe, I used orange and yellow shades.

Begin connecting the spokes with curved lines using the darkest shade of your chosen color. Starting in the center adds an anchor to your creation, just as finding small moments of creativity can anchor you in your busy day.

Step 3: Move outwards, layering lighter shades as you go.

Move outwards, layering lighter shades as you go. This is where you can let go and really enjoy the process. Each curve you draw is a step towards mindfulness, helping you tune into the present moment.
