Mindful galaxy baubles exercise

This mindful galaxy baubles exercise is perfect for relieving some Christmas stress.

I don’t know about you, but for me, Christmas is always a busy time. There are so many things to arrange and to think of.

During busy times, being creative always helps me relax and forget about everything for a while.

One of the most relaxing and satisfying things for me is color blending. I love watching the colors mix together. It’s like magic. So in this galaxy baubles exercise, you can experience this magic for yourself.

When you do this exercise try to focus on what you’re doing, what you see, what you smell. Just be in the moment!

Have fun with this mindful galaxy baubles exercise! Please let me know if you liked this one.

Supplies for the mindful galaxy baubles exercise

Supplies used:

Watercolor paper 300gr (Arches), watercolor (Kuretake Gansai Tambi), paintbrushes (da Vinci), fineliner (Copic), white gouache (Holbein artists’), white acrylic marker (Posca), pencil, washi tape, palette, jar, paper towel.

Alternative supply suggestions:

You can use your kids’ watercolor paints. They may not have as much pigment as the ones in the art stores, but it’s definitely something you can start with at the beginning.

Of course, you can use crayons, alcohol markers, or watercolor pencils as well. However, while it’s certainly possible to blend colors with these, keep in mind that for most of them this works differently than watercolor.

Know that a lot of opaque children’s paint is actually gouache. So you can use that for the white stars as well.

If you only have regular paper, please be aware that your paper cannot hold that much water and will probably warp. Try taping it down to prevent it from warping too much.

Instructions:

1. Before you start, breathe slowly in and out a few times to clear your head. Then we’ll start with drawing a few circles on your paper. Use a helix circle maker or a round object for this.

2.  Take a wet paintbrush and go over your first circle with this. Make sure your whole circle is covered with a thin layer of water. Then pick a color that you like and paint part of your circle with it.

3. Now, pick your second color. Add this to your circle while your first color is still wet. Then watch as these two colors blend together. I always find this so satisfying to watch.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for your other circles.

5. Now, it’s time to add some stars. To get that scattered look with small stars, I used a paintbrush with white gouache. I balanced it on my index finger and tapped it above the paper. You can also do this by applying white opaque paint to a toothbrush and softly tapping it.

6. You can add some bigger stars with an acrylic marker. I made some simple crosses to simulate stars with this marker as well.

7. As a last step, you can trace your circles with a fineliner and add some hooks and strings to turn them into Christmas baubles.

And now you’re done with this mindful galaxy baubles exercise!
