Mindful flower power exercise

In this mindful flower power exercise, we’ll draw an object and fill it with flowers.

Did you know that flowers make you happy and reduce stress?

Let’s see if drawing them makes you feel calm as well.

In this exercise, we’ll fill an entire object with little flowers. You just need a basic sketch to start. I chose a watering can because it reminds me of summer.

Which object will you choose?

The repetitive motion of drawing flowers will redirect your focus to the task at hand. This will make you forget the day-to-day stuff for a while and helps you be in the present moment. It will help you slow down and calm your mind. Just enjoy the process of creating.

Supplies for the mindful flower power exercise

Supplies used:

Bristol paper (Hahnemuhle), alcohol markers (ohuhu), fineliner 0.3 (Copic), fineliner 0.05 (Winsor & Newton), mechanical pencil (Pentel), kneaded eraser, washi tape.

Alternative supply suggestions:

There is no specific material needed for this exercise. Just use what you have. A pen or pencil is good enough for your flowers.

You can use colored pencils, watercolors, crayons, or whatever supplies you have to add color.

I used a kneaded eraser to remove my pencil lines because it’s really soft and doesn’t damage my drawing. You can use a regular eraser if you don’t push too hard. You can also just leave the pencil lines, they’re barely visible in the end.

Instructions

Step 1: Lightly sketch an object of choice

Before you start, slowly breathe in and out a few times to get more relaxed and focused. Choose a simple object that you like or that you see. Lightly sketch it on your paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect, as long as you can recognize the object. You can draw a cup, for example, by just drawing a semicircle with a loop on the side. Don’t make it too complicated.

Step 2: Draw a few larger flowers within your sketched object

Now we’ll start by drawing large flowers in different parts of your object. Just scatter them around. Make them really simple. Just a dot in the middle and 4 or 5 leaves.

Step 3: Fill your entire object with small flowers

The next step is to fill our entire object with small flowers. Start at the edges and work your way inwards. Take your time and go slow. Focus on the repetitive movements and relax. As I said in the previous step, keep it simple. The flowers don’t have to be complicated.

Step 4: Add color

If you like, you can carefully erase your pencil lines. You can also leave them because they’re barely visible after you’ve filled your object with flowers. Choose colors that you like or calm you and color your flowers. It’s your drawing, so you may decide if you want to color them all or only a few.

Step 5: Add some details

Lastly, you can add some extra details, if you like. I added some lines within the leaves of the large flowers and made some flower centers a bit bigger. Do what feels good.
