Mindful Christmas lettering exercise

In this mindful Christmas lettering exercise, we’ll create letters out of Christmas tree branches.

Drawing the needles on a Christmas tree or a branch is one of my favorite things. You might think, what can be so fun about drawing some lines? Well, I love how you can create something with such a simple action.

Moreover, I also love the repetitiveness of it. Drawing lines in the same direction can be really meditative. It always makes me forget everything for a while and helps me to be in the moment, just enjoying drawing needles.

And if you do it with a gelly roll pen, it’s even more fun.

Will you try it? You can even use the outcome as a Christmas card if you like.

I hope you have some well-deserved creative me-time with this mindful Christmas lettering exercise!

Have fun! Please let me know if you’ve tried this one; I would love to see it.

Supplies for the Mindful Christmas lettering exercise

Supplies used:

Bristol paper 300gr (Hahnemuhle), sepia fineliner 0.5 (Winsor & Newton), grey brush pen (Faber-Castell), metallic gelly roll pens (Sakura).

Alternative supply suggestions:

You can use whatever material you have for this exercise, such as colored pencils, crayons, watercolors, etc.

Step 1: Draw some branches to form your letters
Step 1

Before you start, slowly breathe in and out a few times to clear your head.

Decide what you would like to letter. I chose ‘Merry Xmas,’ but you can choose your own text if you like. Now pretend you have a lot of Christmas tree branches and use them to create the letters. This means that it’s not possible to make semicircles with them, for example, and you have to use your creativity to form the letters. Having trouble? Just go outside, find some branches and try to make letters. This will help you to come up with ways to create them. The most difficult letter for me was the ‘s,’ but in the end, I found a way to make it out of branches.

Step 2: Add the needles
Step 2

Now, it’s time to add the needles. This is my favorite part because it’s so relaxing to do. Make sure the needles on both sides have the same angle. Go slow and concentrate on your needles. Add needles to all the branches you’ve created in step 1.

Step 3: Add some details
Step 3

After all your branches have needles, you can add extra details. You can add berries or extra decorations. Adding shadows is also an option. Do what feels good.

Now this mindful Christmas lettering exercise is done! I hope you had fun.
