Why Creative Self-Care is Important
Before my own journey through burnout, I was skeptical about how doodling or painting could actually help with mental well-being. I was so wrong! Embracing creativity allows us to break from the routine and give our overworked minds a breather. Moms, you deserve this release, trust me.
Please let me know if you’ve tried this one; I would love to see it.

The Benefits: Why This Exercise Matters
- Stress Relief: The act of dropping paint and seeing it transform is therapeutic. It helps us take our minds off our worries.
- Letting Go of Control: Moms, we often feel the need to control everything. This exercise teaches us to embrace unpredictability, a valuable lesson in letting go.
- Fun and Whimsical: As adults, we sometimes forget to have fun. This simple activity brings us back to the joy of our childhood days, even if it’s just for a moment.
Supplies used:
Watercolor paper 300 grams (Arches), ecoline (Royal Talens), fineliner 0.3 (Ohuhu), paper, paper towel, and washi tape.
Alternative supply suggestions:
You can use your kids’ watercolor paints or other paint.
Don’t have any of those? Try drawing some blobs with a marker or a colored pencil with your eyes closed.
Step 1: Place your paint drops
Before you start, take a deep breath. Let go of any thoughts that have been troubling you.
Decide on the colors you want to use for your blobs. Think about the mood you want to create. Calming blues? Energizing yellows?
Dip your brush or pipette into the first color of paint. Carefully place a few random drops on your paper. The spacing isn’t critical, but give each blob some room to spread.
Step 2: Let’s create some blobs
Gently lay the second sheet of watercolor paper on top of the first. Apply light pressure with your palms to ensure each blob gets transferred. Carefully peel the sheets apart to see your new creations. You can also do them one by one.
Step 3: Transform your blobs
Let your paint blobs dry completely. Or softly pat them dry with a paper towel. This ensures your pen won’t smudge the paint later on.
Now grab your pen and start doodling eyes, mouths, and any other features to turn those blobs into monsters. Let your imagination run wild!
Step 4: Repeat and have fun
If you have extra space on your paper, feel free to repeat the entire process. Maybe your monsters would like some friends or family!
Optionally, you can give your monsters names or write down what each one represents for you. Fear? Joy? Ambitions? It’s up to you!
There you have it, a simple yet transformative Spooky Art Therapy Exercise! So, this Halloween, while the kids are out trick-or-treating or engrossed in their own crafts, take some time for yourself to create your own blob monsters.
Until next time, take care and keep those creative juices flowing!
