Mindful upstrokes and downstrokes rainbow exercise

Step 4: Repeat for several rows with different colours to create a rainbow

A mindful calligraphy basics exercise, which will show you how to do upstrokes and downstrokes and combine those with your breathing. It is meant to get you in a nice and relaxed flow. And you get to make a nice rainbow as well!

Supplies used:

Smooth paper (Rhodia) and brush pens (Tombow fudenosuke hard tip), colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink.

Alternative supply suggestions:

If you don’t have brush pens, it is still possible to do the exercise. Just grab a regular sheet of paper and some colored pencils. With colored pencils you can make the thin and thick strokes as well. Really, I have tested this. If colored pencils are also not available to you, you can use a regular pencil as well and just skip the rainbow part.

Instructions:

1. Draw an upstroke by very slowly moving your pen in an upward direction. Breathe in when you go up.
2. Now draw a downstroke by very slowly moving your pen in a downward direction. Breathe out when you go down.
3. Now create a row by alternately drawing upstrokes and downstrokes. Start with a red color. Focus on your breathing and go SLOWWWW.
4. Now create more rows of upstrokes and downstrokes and use a different colour for every row. For a rainbow, use colors in the following order: orange, yellow, gree, blue, purple and pink. Keep focusing on your breathing and keep going slow.
